So today I installed a new laptop for my niece. Fresh copy of windows 10 (home edition) on a Dell Inspiron 5558. Installation was successful, so I went ahead and installed her copy of Office 2013. The next step was, obviously, checking for updates to make sure everything is up to date before wrapping it all up. That’s what I thought anyway, soon after starting the update process I got the following error message:
…bla bla bla, something went wrong, bla bla bla…this may help (yeh right) – (0x800705b4)
September 3rd, 2017 Update:
Video tutorial now available for this fix. Watch it on TheGeneralistIT YouTube channel here.
Of course I googled it, and found some online resources with some suggestion, such as
- Use Windows Update Troubleshooter the debug and fix
- Disable any 3rd party antivirus and / or firewall
- Disable Windows defender
- The following posts at answers.microsoft.com – Post #1 – 0x800705b4 window defender error code, Post #2 – Windows 10 Service Registration is Missing or Corrupt
None of the above worked. To be honest I was ready to format and start over, but then I had my AHA moment.

It seems as though this issue is caused by a non-functioning or disabled Windows Defender, you can also just completely disable windows defender in windows 10 with a registry edit, this also solves this issue.
It could be. The whole point to this post was to find a solution without editing the registry.

Seriously, man if you’re even in the Louisville area, look me up- I’m buying beers until you can’t stand. I spent HOURS trying to fix this. And DAMN checkbox was all it took. You da man!
Noted. I saved your email and I promise to drop you a note when I am in the neighborhood! I am very happy you got it working again!
I love techie forums. I’ve had this desktop for years and I was afraid that if I returned it to factory settings it would revert back to Windows Vista and take YEARS to update. Thanks so much for this solution!
Glad to help Emily!
This worked!!! I was running Windows 10 in VirtualBox on a MacBook Pro and I could not get Windows 10 to update until I tried this. Absolutley brilliant. Thank you so much.
Woohoo!! Glad you got it sorted Geoff!
I had this 0x800705b4 error, turns out I was on a guest wifi network that was set to 0.5mbps rate limiting, switched to our main company wifi(20/20mbit) and it worked instantly.
Thanks for sharing! Glad you got it sorted.
