On August 2nd, 2016 Microsoft release free update to 10 , build 1607, also known as “Anniversary Update”.
The update process want fully integrate into windows updates, so most users could simply accept it via the Windows updates windows and install at their most convenient time.

However, for IT professional who manage networks with multiple clients, it is very common to have a WSUS server installed. I will not get into the details of what WSUS server really is, simply because of the fact the if f you don’t know what WSUS is, I’m sorry, but this article is not for you. However, if you are an IT pro. Struggling to approve the anniversary update on your WSUS, read on!

Personally, I had a problem approving the anniversary update on my home lab WSUS server for a while, simply because it wasn’t available in the list of pending update.

I have followed many online resources to troubleshoot the issue without success, which puzzled me as I had no previous issues with my WSUS server, and all the required items where installed on the server itself (check the external resource list at the end of this post for more info)

Then it hit me….

Rule of thumb

If it gets too complicated,
make sure you’re in the right direction!

If you read other posts written by me (such as: fixing windows 10 update error 0x800705b4, Fixing Office 365 Shared Mailbox SMTP Error: data not accepted, or Fix Windows 10 Store Error 0x803f7000) you probably know by now that I believe in simple solutions. About 80% of the time, if you need to get too technical you’re probably looking at the problem the wrong way…

This case was not different.
As it turns out I had a few options missing under “Products and Classification” settings on my server, and here is what you need to verify on your server as well.

First, under “Products–>Windows” make sure the following are selected

  • Windows 10 Anniversary Update and Later Servicing Drivers.
  • Windows 10 Anniversary Update and Later Upgrade & Servicing Drivers.
  • Windows 10 Dynamic Update.
  • Windows 10 Feature On Demand.
  • If you have Windows 10 server – also enable Windows 10 Anniversary Update Server and Later Servicing Drivers.

Second,
At the classifications tab make sure that “Upgrades” are enabled.

Then at the main WSUS screen you should see a new section called Upgrades.

You’re all set, just approve the relevant KB IDs, and relax.

As always, if you have found more solutions to this problem, kindly share with a comment.
